Sun-Times Columnist

A Romney report . . .

Former conservative GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a wealthy businessman, didn't hire movers a few weeks ago after selling his house in Utah and moving its contents to California.

• The upshot: A source tells Sneed that Romney, who is eyeing another presidential bid, loaded a moving van with the help of his sons -- and drove it to his new home in Southern California.

Romney Report II . . .

Sneed is told Romney, who helped lure the 2002 Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City, phoned Chicago Olympic chief  Pat Ryan on Tuesday to offer encouragement and help.

• Let's hope: "Romney is convinced Chicago will get the 2016 games," the source added. He was in town for a fund-raiser for pal/ state Sen. Dan Rutherford (R-Pontiac), who's eyeing a bid for treasurer.

Saturday March 21 afternoon: I did several media interviews in Mt. Vernon, Marion, Carterville and Carbondale. It was good to help get the message out.

Saturday March 21 evening: My friend Shawn from Pinckneyville was good enough to drive and we all went to the Giant City Lodge, outside of Carbondale, where I made remarks for the Jackson County Lincoln Day Dinner. They had a great crowd with lots of energy.

Saturday March 21 later evening: We quickly went to the Williamson County Lincoln Day Dinner in Marion where I was the Keynote Speaker. It was nice to be with friends where I started my state-wide speaking efforts in 2003.

Sunday March 22 morning: After checking out of the Motel 6 (saving campaign resources) in Marion we head out for the 4 ½ hour drive home. Barb Frobish is good enough to be the Road Warrior; she drives and I work on the computer!

The State Jounal-Register

CHICAGO — Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich certainly isn’t acting like a man staring down a federal corruption indictment that could come any day.

College Illinois enrollment period

College Illinois! The state’s prepaid tuition plan, allows families to lock in today’s tuition levels for a child’s future college education. The general enrollment period runs through April 30, 2009.

Chamber Leadership Team

The Pontiac Chamber Commerce leadership team was in Springfield and joined me on the Senate Floor for a photo.  It was great to see friends from my home town of Pontiac at the Capitol.

Irish Ballad

Ronald Regan quoted an old Irish Ballad after his defeat in the 1976 Republican Presidential Primary Election.  It is one of my favorite quotes used by Reagan.  It reads as follows: "Lay me down and bleed awhile.  Though I am wounded, I am not slain.  I shall rise and fight again".  I hope you enjoy it as well.

She Gains A Few More

While driving home from an evening in Chicago, "G" reached the milestone of 10,000 miles somewhere near Odell.

Rutherford may set sights on run for state treasurer

Kurt Erickson Column..........The Pantagraph

With Democrat Alexi Giannoulias looking like a sure bet to run for the U.S. Senate in 2010, at least one Republican has surfaced as a possible candidate to replace him in the state treasurer’s office.

State Sen. Dan Rutherford, R-Chenoa, is expected to announce his statewide plans in the coming weeks. He earlier hinted at a 2010 run for governor after running unsuccessfully for Illinois secretary of state in 2006.

But, an open shot in the treasurer’s office is pretty enticing.

No matter what Rutherford decides, he’s already out raising money.

On March 31, Mitt Romney returns to Illinois for a fundraiser in Chicago on behalf of Rutherford’s pending statewide campaign.

Rutherford was Illinois chairman of Romney’s unsuccessful presidential bid. The two were last together for dinner at the Republican National Convention in Minnesota.

Romney’s public and private appearances around the country are fueling speculation of his interest in another presidential bid. In addition to his reception for Rutherford, the former Massachusetts governor will hold a luncheon fundraiser in Chicago for his Free and Strong America PAC, which he created after withdrawing from the GOP Presidential race last year.

Student Advisory Committee

Representative Pritchard's student advisory committee came to Springfield for the day.  We had a chance to get a photo together on the Senate Floor.  Representative Pritchard is fortunate to have such a great group of young men and women working for him.
