State
Senator Dan Rutherford, the only Republican candidate planning to take
on Democratic Secretary of State Jesse White, has told
Political Insider that he
remains committed to the SOS race, despite the decision of Treasurer
Judy Baar Topinka to leave that race open as she seeks the Governor's
mansion.
"I am running for
Secretary of State,"
Rutherford told
PI this morning.
Republican party
leaders have encouraged him to stay in the race for SOS, even in the
face of Topinka's decision to leave the sole Republican statewide
office. Rutherford has impressed the
party with his energetic campaign to unseat the generally popular
White.
Rutherford has also embarked on a very
aggressive fundraising effort that is likely to close the funding gap
with White. Rutherford reported
$340,000 on hand as of June 30, the last reporting period. Jesse
White reported $1.5 million. An upcoming
Washington fundraiser
featuring beltway heavyweights is an indication that he is making
progress attracting national attention, and money.
