HARRY'S IS A HIT!

Sen. Rutherford and Matt Romney pose with Harry

I held my annual Networking Party at Harry Caray's Thursday night and it was a great time as always (the staff was outstanding and everything was perfect - thank you!)

Thought it might be of particular interest that among those in attendance was Matt Romney, the son of Mitt Romney and one of five brothers touring the country on behalf of their father. Matt shook hands and mingled throughout the night, before addressing the crowd. WGN Radio's Orion Samuelson and former WLS Radio host Eileen Byrne also gave short remarks and received an enthusiastic response.

Thank you to all those who came out to show your support. This is one of my favorite events all year and you always help make it special.

As you may know Josh, Craig and Matt Romney, sons of Mitt and Ann Romney, have been to different parts of Illinois. Josh was in Springfield, Craig went to the state fair, and Matt attended the Harry Caray's event in Chicago. They have emailed and told me what great visits they had. They have posted entries about their visits on their five brothers blog. Please feel free to read these and other blog postings at: http://fivebrothers.mittromney.com/blog

Local county board members visit Springfield

Pictured from left to right are: George Knudsen, Bill Flott, and Sen. Rutherford.

Springfield, IL – State Sen. Dan Rutherford (R-Pontiac) welcomes Bill Flott, Chairman of the Livingston County Board, and George Knudsen, Public Property Chairman of the Livingston County Board, to the Illinois State Senate in Springfield. Rutherford, who remains in Springfield for overtime session, met with Flott and Knudsen to address current issues and concerns for Livingston County.

Fox Feeding

We had a lot of rain around my area this week. On the way into town, having gotten home from Springfield, I saw a young fox along the road eating. I slowed down and pulled the car up, he kept eating. This is out in the country and no cars were coming for some time.

The young fox would go down in the shallow ditch and root around, coming up with a night crawler in his mouth. He would flip it around and then start munching on it....down to the low of the ditch and nose around for more.

He had to munch on a dozen while I sat there....great show. Unfortunately my camera was left at the office and I did not get a picture.....well, maybe after the next heavy rain!

Kaleb visits Springfield

This is my nephew Kaleb (right) and George working at the Pasfield House in Springfield.  Kaleb came down to help get some computer work done.  It was nice to spend some time with him, and the extra set of hands never hurts!

Overtime Session in Springfield

I generally don't even open a mass distributed e mail, but this photo has been making the rounds. Being here at the Capitol and seeing such little leadership from the 'Second Floor' (that is Springfield Speak for the Governor's Office...that's the floor of the Capitol that his office is on, even if he is not there).

Pontiac Bonneville

At the beginning of July the Pontiac Bonneville had 260,820 miles on her. She loves ethanol and the open road!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROSEMARIE!

I was able to spend some time with Rosemarie Long a few nights ago at a reception in honor of her birthday.  Rosemarie is a very close friend of mine.  I guess there are some positives to overtime session!

4th of July parades... I love 'em!

I was able to enjoy some of the local 4th of July parades, close to home.  I walked in three parades on Independence Day: Towanda, Downs, and Chenoa.

Three parades, three shirts, three drivers... 1 pair of shoes!

A special thank you to Barb, Steve, Barbara & John, and Kaleb. I appreciate all the help you gave me.

Parade Shoes

I walk all the parades I am in; it is good exercise and gives me a chance to shake hands with people. I did one parade and it was so hot that my shoes had tar all over them, even the back of my pants. I now have a very comfortable pair of shoes that are strictly for parades...they get beat up, tarred, scuffed, but they clean up nice and keep on walkin'

3rd of July in Emington

On the 3rd of July I walked the Emington Parade. It is a long tradition in a small community of about 100 people. It started when the little kids in town wanted their own parade since they always had to go to the big towns for the 4th. They decorated their bicycles and all in town came out to watch. Because the town is so small they went down Main Street, which was only one block long, by the small post office, the grain elevator, the tavern and in front of the firehouse twice.

Forty years later the kids on the bike are now the adults organizing the event. It's a great tradition and I have been attending for over a decade, as a State Representative and now a Senator.

The route hasn't changed and, yes, as State Senator, I too walk the route around the small town....twice!

Past Diary Pages

I have had a monthly diary page for some time now and have been able to share many things with you. At the bottom of this page you will find past months that you can click on and view. One month I personally thought interesting was June. Click Here to view the June Diary Page.

Now it's a Mystery Bird??

As you may know I posted a story on the June Diary page about moving a juvenile red tail hawk off the side of the road near a corn field.  A couple of days after the story was posted, Eric, a friend of mine, emailed me and said that he thought the bird was a mature American Kestrel. Please email me your thoughts about what the mystery bird is at DanRutherford@DanRutherford.org.

Eric

Nice diary Dan.  However I believe the red tailed hawk is actually a mature American Kestrel.  Keep up the good fight.

Leland

Senator,

The bird picture in your diary is, in fact, a mature American Kestrel, the smallest of the "raptors."  Just happens to be one of my favorites.  Hopefully it was just stunned and woke up to fly away.  By the way, handling it was a kind, if somewhat dangerous, thing to do.  Use gloves... those little guys carry some mean weapons.

FROM DAN: I really appreciate the feedback.  He must have been stunned, because when I came back a few hours later he was gone.  I don't like handling wildlife, I just think it is wrong, but in order to save their life I will.  As to being careful, believe me, I sure was for the animal's safety and mine.

I jog every morning, 20 to 25 minutes, just to get the blood going.  This morning as I was jogging near the old bridge by my house a doe and two fawns were feeding.  It's a beautiful morning!
