Dan's Diary

September  2006

Special note:  the good looking lady in the center photo at the top of my September Diary page (pink sweater, front row right) is my grandma. We are blessed; she is healthy, has a strong opinion on political issues and turned 95 August 31. I love my grandma, a lot!

Challenger promises no family on payroll

The Daily Herald

Taking aim at Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White’s five relatives on the office payroll, GOP challenger Dan Rutherford Thursday pledged not to hire any family members if elected in November.

The Republican state senator from downstate Pontiac blasted White, a Chicago Democrat, for promoting his daughter to a $112,512-a-year post, allowing a contract employee to pen his biography and permitting his chief-of-staff’s wife to come on board as a temporary secretary exempt from the contract bid process.

Wow...this month has gone fast and a lot in it....the energy is so high, friends are working hard and the message of change in the SoS Office is coming through....thanks to all for parade participation and help!

"We are clearly seeing a pattern of impropriety coming to light," Rutherford said in the statement. "The people of Illinois saw Jesse White's predecessor convicted for improprieties akin to what White is doing today."

Emory Boards (fingernail files) are used by our campaign all the time; parades, fairs, other handouts. We order them a quarter of a million at a time! We have now gone through over one million of them!!!

As you know, my nephew Kaleb handles all the website matters....does a pretty good job at it, don't you think? Let him know: kaleb@danrutherford.org He got to meet President Bush (we will post the photo when it comes), and a few of my other friends!!

Thousands of miles by car and air....thanks Chad!

Rutherford Commits To Not Hire His Own Family

Jesse White Hiring Improprieties MUST End

(Chicago, IL) – Secretary of State Nominee Dan Rutherford makes it very clear where he stands with regards to nepotism in the office, differing dramatically with current Secretary of State Jesse White. Rutherford publicly announced his policy that will be instituted upon taking office:

bullet

“I will NOT hire my family to work for the Office of the Secretary of State.  Period.”

bullet

“I will NOT permit my senior staff to hire their family members on no-bid contracts.”

bullet

“I will NOT permit an employee or no bid contractor of the Secretary of State to write my biography.”

Some friends asked about the re-forestation project I have been involved with on the ground I own outside of Pontiac: Yes, I do the planting myself. Help comes from my brother-in-law, sister, nephew and even my mom has been behind the tractor on the planter putting in the seedlings! Restoring wild life habitat is my way to personally get away, relax and feel like I am giving something back to Mother Earth.

Jesse White Agency Director Convicted

Rutherford: Crimes of Jesse White Director Could Have Been Prevented

"Peoria, IL – As Jesse White’s Agency Director, Cecil Turner, was recently convicted of federal crimes, nominee for Secretary of State Dan Rutherford highlighted that the corruption in the Secretary of State’s Office continued when White took office."

The Rutherford and Radogno camps spent an evening putting together yard signs in Springfield. A lot of fun, fellowship and friends telling stories on their candidates!

"Jesse White Policy Reversal Highlights More Improprieties"

“I am happy to hear that Jesse White will no longer be accepting contributions from his Secretary of State employees.  This has been my position all along.   I do not accept contributions from my Senate employees now.  I have said throughout this campaign that employees whose salary increases and evaluations are determined by the Secretary should not be allowed to contribute personally through gifts or through political donations to one’s campaign.  I think it’s fundamentally wrong.”

The Pontiac Bonneville started September with 231,565 miles. She had quite a run on the Common Sense Express Caravan, 2107 miles. She was the tail car carrying my luggage and extra campaign materials. A special thanks to Kenton for being the Road Warrior that entire week. The Bonneville hasn’t been treated better, drinking good ethanol and happy to see gas prices going down!!

The Common Sense Express was a great Motor Coach tour with the entire GOP slate of state-wide candidates. We went to all corners of the state. We got great energy from the people of Illinois. Check out photo tour of the Common Sense Express on the August Diary!

"Wow, talk about an enthusiastic response. But, then, what would you expect from White's office? Yes, it turns out the writer sent the message from a computer in the secretary of state's office. Presumably, the writer is a White employee."

The State Fair Parade in DuQuoin gave us a tremendous warm greeting. We got all kinds a thumbs up, "hey, I saw you here last year" and people wanting to shake hands and give encouragement. The momentum is there....
